Choosing the Perfect Breast Implant Types

When it comes to breast implants, it’s definitely not a case of one-size-fits-all. The perfect type of breast implant depends on your preferences and which option best suits your body type. Top plastics surgeon Dr. Ravinder Jarial describes how to choose your perfect breast implant type.

Silicone or Saline?

Your first decision regarding breast implants is whether to go the silicone or saline route. Each has its pros and cons. Silicone implants tend to feel more like breast tissue than the saline variety. However, in case of an implant rupture, saline is more easily absorbed by the body.

Saline may prove your perfect breast implant if you want enhancement with a greater degree of projection. Silicone implants are less likely to ripple or wrinkle after surgery. Because silicone implants come pre-filled, the incision scar is usually slightly longer. Saline implants are filled after insertion.

Smooth or Textured?

Every breast implant has an outer shell. You can choose between a smooth or textured outer shell. A smooth implant does not attach to tissue around the implant. A textured shell, which is rougher and more pebbled, will attach to tissues. By doing so, textured shell implants are unlikely to move around. They tend to feel less natural than smooth implants.

Capsular contracture occurs when the tissue around the breast hardens. The textured shell was developed to prevent capsular contracture, but it is not clear that the outer shell type makes much difference. Capsular contracture warrants breast augmentation revision.

Round or Teardrop?

Breast implants come in two primary shapes: round or teardrop. Round implants give the breasts more volume and even fullness. The breasts appear higher, and more cleavage is evident.

Teardrop implants provide the most natural look, as they are designed to mimic breast shape. Also known as gummy bear implants, teardrop implants retain their shape better than round implants. Only silicone implants can be teardrop shaped.

Body Type

How is your body currently proportioned? What do you wish to achieve with breast augmentation? Your body type and the changes you desire in your breasts will affect your implant decisions.

For instance, petite women may fare better with smaller implants. Larger implants can result in back pain for someone with a small frame. Pear-shaped women may want larger implants to balance their proportions. Women with larger frames can carry bigger implants more easily.

What are your goals? Do you want to wear more low-cut tops and show off your new cleavage? Are you athletic? Athletic women may want to avoid large implants as they may interfere with fitness. By answering such questions, you will have a better idea of the perfect breast implants for your size and objectives.
