Considering Eyelid Surgery? Here’s What You Should Know

Of all the signs of aging, arguably nothing makes someone look older than drooping eyelids. Sagging eyelids can make people look old and cause them to appear angry or sad, even if they feel fine. Eyelid surgery can take years of aging off your face, making you appear more youthful and less burdened. It’s a key factor in facial rejuvenation. Here, Dr. Ravinder Jarial discusses what patients should know about eyelid surgery.

Blepharoplasty

Formally known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery involves removing the excess skin and fat around the eyelids that is causing drooping and sagging. It will also eliminate undereye bags. Patients receive either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation.

Dr. Jarial makes his incision along the eyelid fold for the upper eyelid. For the lower eyelid, he places the incision in the natural crease beneath the eyelashes.

In some cases, eyelid surgery improves vision. While insurance does not pay for cosmetic procedures, in extreme cases where patients have drooping eyelids that severely impact their vision, surgery may be covered.

Eyelid Surgery Candidates

Healthy non-smokers who wish to rejuvenate their eyes are usually good eyelid surgery candidates. However, patients with serious eye conditions are not blepharoplasty candidates.

Risk Factors

Although most patients experience no issues, as with any surgery, blepharoplasty carries certain risks. These include:

  • Difficulty closing eyes
  • Dry eyes
  • Infection
  • Light sensitivity
  • Vision changes

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Expect to take one to two weeks off work for eyelid surgery recuperation. After surgery, your eyelids may look bruised for up to three weeks. When you can go back to work depends upon the nature of your job and whether you want colleagues to know you’ve had work done.

For the first few days post-surgery, keep your head elevated while sleeping. Using two or three pillows can help. Avoid wearing contact lenses for at least two weeks or until cleared by your doctor. Don’t wear eye makeup for about the same period.

Do not rub your eyes.

Eyelid Surgery Results

After the swelling disappears, you’ll see the results of your eyelid surgery. Keep in mind that complete healing may take a few months. You appear more alert and rejuvenated.

Another great benefit of eyelid surgery is that results appear natural. People notice that you look better and revitalized but unless your eyelid drooping was severe, most won’t suspect you had a blepharoplasty.
